Marty Anderson music review.

I can't believe it's already been two months since I saw the best solo show of my life when Marty Anderson came to the SOTA theatre. I just found this gritty review of his java jive show the night before at Ben Paris's music blog
if you weren't able to catch him when he was in town you can take a listen to this intriguing, original and obscure indie artist from the SF bay area at this page.

Virtual fashion is fun, but I'll take real fashion, please.

Today the Tribune featured a story on the fun of virtual fashion sites and I must admit I have been sucked into the world of Meez.com to waste a small precious portion of my life trying on different boots, coats and even hairstyles at the stroke of a key board. The thing that is troubling about these sites though is they are yet another virutal placebo for real life.
Understandably, if you are older, overweight or have other beauty issues, it's a lot more fun to live out shopping fantasies on sites like Stardoll, Design-her gals and others where you can be perfectly gorgeous and thin and try on the most amazing of clothes (even Louis Vuitton and other high end designers) at the click of a button and with no critique from your mother, significant other, etc. But this is sad because of the very fact that it is for only your consumption and entertainment, another escape from reality, but real fashion is about more than that. It is about expressing yourself to the world around you and also a way to brighten or entertain the lives of those around you.
When my mother used to say this about her view of her fashion, to enliven other people's lives through what she wore, I thought she was vain and frivolous. Until my father was dying in a hospital for weeks and each day I was surprised at how much this man who never paid attention to fashion (the man wore denim overalls and a white cotton shirt with flip flops the last 20 years of his life.) commented on my earrings and other fashion details constantly. There truly was nothing else around to entertain him so I chose my clothes and accessories carefully (which was difficult as I was in Japan and living out of my suitcase)each day hoping to give him something pleasant, in his dreary situation to appreciate.
So this is what fashion really is, creating a pleasant and artistic environment wherever we are. I also realize the relevance of this when I did a stint working at a demo station at Costco. It was abhorant to see what people wore. One woman, rolled out of her bed with no bra, hair in a rats nest, smeared mascara, sweats and flip flops. What made her think the outside world wanted to see her in that condition? Considering her cart was full of pricey venetian glass vases, she clearly had the means and even the taste to make herself presentable and the fact that she didn't choose to showed how little respect she had for herself and the people she would be encountering.
This is why people used to "dress" for dinner, to prepare themselves to enter into community with others. Dressing nicely was a way of showing respect for the others you would be with, that you wanted to put your best foot forward and make the interaction as pleasant as possibly visually and otherwise.
So this long rant is not because I want to be a self appointed fashion hall monitor, and not to say that I am not against the entertainment of virtual fashion, but rather plead that: PLEASE! We need more real fashion in our real lives. So get dressed go out your door and get a life!

Functional Fashion Rock Show!

Sorry if you missed this supreme subculture event last Friday...lucky for you we've got the 411.
Our Protagonists: Designers/Rock stars, Alex Tapia and Mike Jolley (fashions now on sale at urbanX - hurry in! We sold two the first day!) put on a stellar show of original fashions and music. Models sang danced and generally rocked the night.
Below are general scenes from the most fabulous of spaces: The mysterious Stereo Lounge and the beautiful people there along with shots of the show. Unfortunately my lamo old camera that needs it's card reformatted went fritz half way into the show missing performances by Daniel Blue, Colin Reynolds and others...We are trying to talk the boys into making bootleg recordings of the music to sell at urbanXchange.
